The other day I decided to check out the made for tv werewolf movie War Wolves since it’s been a while since I watched any lycanthrope movies. It started off decent, sort of reminding me of a lower budget version of Dog Soldiers, mostly because the main characters are in the military. It kicks off with an ok street fighting scene set in generic middle east country with US soldiers being ambushed by insurgents. While pinned down, they are attacked by some “dog men” as a local refers to them. These amount to basically humans with fangs, elongated ears and enhanced speed and strength. Despite them not being very werewolf-like, I liked seeing middle eastern “dog men” as they looked quite cool. This is about as far as the “cool” element of the movie got.

I watched the entire movie, but really don’t have too much recollection of what actually happened. There’s a typical deserted roadside bar murder spree scene, which is not nearly as good as the one in Near Dark, but okay. There were a pair of old men werewolf hunters who were terrible shots and seemed to miss every single werewolf they shot. The movie never really showed the werewolves as animals, instead opting for an almost vampyric appearance. As anyone who knows me knows, I prefer my werewolves to be huge and hairy and looking like wolves, whether walk on all fours or just two. Really, I don’t even recall how the movie ended and I just watched it less than 24 hours ago. I say, don’t waste your time on it.

In other, related news, I did watch Trick ‘r Treat which has a great werewolf plot in it. The transformation scene is quite possibly the best one since An American Werewolf in London. Seriously, it’s a cool movie.
